Early yesterday morning, the Nyamuragira volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in Africa erupted. The eruption was caused by the splitting of the African plate.

Located in the east of Congo, the volcano threatens populations of chimpanzees living on its lower slopes. The eruption may have destroyed their habitat and the ash and gases it emitted have caused health issues for the people living near it. The eruption has also destroyed crops and harmed domestic animals. People fear that the lava might flow into the Virunga National Park nearby, which holds settlements and villages.

In response to the situation, Feller Lutahichirwa, a government official, said that the UN helicopters were helping to monitor the situation.

In my opinion, with the help of technology, we can help minimise the damage in such events by warning the people living near a volcano if it is going to erupt and evacuating the village with such warning.
